Case Studies
I ended up going over to Awsaj school and chose 3 different students to test them out and see how they improved after getting some special help during school. These students are tested out at a Level A during the October 2015 benchmark assessments. Within each case study, the student's improvement is shown throughout the process.

Case Study #1Grade 1 student tested out at a Level A during the October 2015 benchmark assessments. After 6 weeks of additional small group assistance she gained 3 levels in reading. She is now reading at a D level. During the additional small group time various phonemic awareness skills were targeted to help bridge the gap in her learning. Most of these activities came from the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Library Intervention System. Activities were based on her needs and in conjunction with books on her independent and instructional reading levels. She was also meeting with her classroom teacher in a small group at her level. In addition to the Fountas & Pinnell program, each student works in small groups with Words Their Way. Words Their Way is a foundational program that helps students develop foundational skills targeted in the Common Core State Standards. Children are given a pretest to determine which level of instruction they need to begin on. Each lesson helps to develop the child’s vocabulary, spelling, and phonics. This program coupled with the extra support outside of class has brought student #1 up to a point where additional assistance is not needed. The Learning Support team will continue to monitor her progress and adapt as needed.

Case Study #2Grade 2 student tested out at a level A during the October benchmark assessments. After 6 weeks of additional small group assistance he has shown very little progress. He is reading at an instructional level B and has severe behavior problems that are prohibiting him from progressing more rapidly. He was referred to the school psychologist for further testing. The results of this testing showed his IQ to be quite low. He is performing at the level to be expected. With the behavior concerns and the results of the testing, it has been decided that more time is needed with the learning support teacher. In addition to assistance in English and Arabic, he will now receive help with mathematics as well as behavior support. The team will assess his progress again in January.

Case Study #3Grade 1 student who is new to a dual language program tested at a level A in October. After regular small group intervention sessions using the Fountas & Pinnell program, she gained 4 reading levels. She has been dismissed from additional services. She is a motivated learner who will continue to show progress. We will monitor her progress and adjust her level of intervention as needed.
